Marketing And Advertising For Your Small Business
Marketing & Advertising for Your Small Business – Advertising Basics For Small Businesses
Yep, it’s scary investing in marketing or advertising. Who knows if anything the company says will actually work? The advertising company can’t tell you that you will see a 30% return on your investment. This is because it is based on how consumers, digest the information on their own. That makes for such a dilemma because as a business owner you know that you have to advertise. How else will you get the word out about your business?
In my opinion this is why most businesses do what they feel is “safe” and “sure-proof.” This usually means spending a fortune on advertising in the local paper and in the phone book and then waiting for customers to walk through your doors wanting to spend their money with you. Meanwhile the return is ambiguous which allows the business to feel no real sense of dissonance from their actions. Or some may actually feel some real consonance towards your actions because so many businesses just like you advertise in the same way. But what about the business who has figured out how to communicate with this new consume? I hate to tell you but they are going to have a huge edge on you. Sadly another business may succeed not because they offer a better product than your business, but because they were able to get the word out to their customers. In fact, you could offer something far better than some your competitors. But at the end of the day if customers don’t want to spend their money with you, then you have lost. I wish for your sake and the consumer’s sake that they know about you and what your business has to offer.
OK enough with that. Let’s get back to the root of the issue. As a business you have a product/service/experience that you sell. Assuming that it’s of value to consumers then you have a real chance for success. A few good questions to ask yourself are the following:
What do I offer consumers that my competitors do not?
Why do consumers value what I offer them?
How do consumers know about what my product/service/experience?
Most of you will say you have a better product, better experience, faster service, etc. And that may be the truth. But how would a consumer know that? Some of businesses don’t even advertise. Some of do, but the ad says all of about 20 words and doesn’t give the consumer much information. Be honest with yourself, how do consumers know about the benefits of your business?
Okay, if we can agree that what you offer is of real value to consumers then by the same logic we can probably assume that the more consumers that know about you the more likely you are to have them purchase what you offer. Although advertising cannot quantify a return we can agree that good advertising gives you good exposure. If you know where and how consumers want their information given to them then you can effectively generate some powerful exposure. With that logic it should be more comforting to accept the obvious fact that advertising can easily generate a positive ROI if done with the right company.
