The Internet is a myriad of information and often times rubbish. But sometimes there are some gems to be found. One of these is Free Samples. Especially in a consumerist culture like America, companies are competing for every last buck. They must differentiate from every other rival. Often when they believe they have a product or service that is a cut above to their competitor’s, the best way to increase market share is to offer free samples or free trials. The best advertising is always legitimate testimonies. Forget mass advertising and slick packaging. In the end if your product or service stinks, word of mouth will destroy your campaign and any chance you have of getting an edge on your rivals. Think the movie Bruno. With much hype after Sasha Baron Cohen’s previous release of the hit Borat, much was expected from his new film Bruno. But within hours of Bruno being released, moviegoers began tweeting negative reviews via Twitter and thus the movie performed badly at the box office.

Therefore a company is risking much by offering free samples. Their product or service must match or exceed the consumer’s expectations. Word of mouth syndrome will then take over. If you don’t think this is true, think back to when you last got appalling service at the utilities company and you began whinging to your networks and family, effectively slandering the brand of the company. On the other hand, do you recall a time when you were in a clothes store and got wonderful and couldn’t wait to go back? Again the Word of Mouth concept whilst not new plays an essential part to publicising the company’s services and products.

But while genuine companies are putting themselves out there, many freebies on the Net must be approached with caution. But how do you know if you are getting a legitimate freebie or not? Here are 2 things to look for when getting Freebies online:

Is there a charge involved? If you are getting something for free online then it should be just that – free. If you have to pay for postage and it seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is a scam. Definitely be wary if your credit card details are asked for. I try to look for freebies that if require a payment of some sort, that use Paypal. I am more at ease with that process rather than giving my Mastercard details. It is only worth paying a shipping fee if it is significantly less than the value of the free sample you are receiving. Basically this falls under the definition of a Cheabie. A definition: “A hybrid of ‘cheap’ and ‘freebies’ referring to a freebie that has a small but often negligible cost (such as postage). While costing a small sum of money, cheabies can represent similar or greater value than a completely free freebie as it is often of higher quality.”

All online freebies will require you to pass on your email and a postal. Obviously a shipping address is required so the company knows where to send the free sample. It is recommended that you create an additional email address for free samples so you don’t flood your normal email with junk mail.
